One-eyed Sphinx   Smerinthus cerisyi

The One-eyed Sphinx has also been listed as the Willow Sphinx. It is a member of the Sphingidae family and Sphinginae subfamily (Sphinx moths).

Identification: Cryptic, brownish-gray, camouflage pattern on forewings. Hindwings are pinkish brown, with one, black rimmed, blue eye spot with a black center. Wingspan: 62-90 mm.

Life History: One brood, hibernates as pupa.

Habitat and Range: British Columbia to Newfoundland

Host Plants: Willow (Salix spp.) and poplar (Populus spp.).

Flight Period: May-August.

Similar Species: The Twin Spotted Sphinx (S. jamaicensis) has a blue eye spot that is divided by a black bar.
