Perhaps no other group of people has left such a legacy as the Doukhobors that settled in the Grand Forks area. A peace-loving group of people who were forced to leave their native Russia due to their beliefs, the Doukhobors settled in the area in 1909 after securing 4000 acres near the Dewdney Trail location. They were determined to live a lifestyle of self-sufficiency and built a brick factory to produce bricks for their homes, a sawmill for lumber for their buildings and planted extensive tracts of fruit trees and vegetables for their food. By the year 1913 there were 1000 members of the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood living in the area under the leadership of Peter (Lordly) Verigin.
