A Barge

Robert Rafailovich Falk
A Barge

The work of Robert Falk, a member of the Jack of Diamonds group, is typified by lyricism and emotion. It is therefore no surprise to learn that Falk was referred to as the lyrical follower of Cezanne, which set him apart from the other Jack of Diamonds artists. The landscape A Barge is typical in style of painting in the 1910s. It was painted in Finland in the summer of 1911 and shows the banks of the small maritime town of Nyslott. The same formal pattern can be found in various parts of the work: in the semi-circular lines of the boats, in the curve of a woman's silhouette, in the contours of the barge and the multicoloured, mirrored reflections on the surface of the water. The painter generalizes the shapes of real objects, but pays particular attention to the colours, while emphasizing the pictorial expressiveness of a modest Finnish landscape.
