REGION FOUR: UPPER KOOTENAY RIVER
The Kootenay River slips past the origins of the Columbia River at Columbia Lake, separated by mere metres of glacial till as it flows south from its headwaters deep within the Rocky Mountains. It mirrors the path of the Columbia River, heading south, passing through the Canada- US border to enter the state of Montana where it is contained by the Libby Dam whose reservoir flooded the ranchlands south of Wardner. Once past the Libby Dam, the river turns north to flow back across the Canada US border.
