There was a beacon or possibly a day mark established on the site in 1869, previous to the construction of the present tower, which was moved to its present site in 1908. This tower was typical of the utilitarian towers of the era with steeply sloped sides, lantern gallery supported on iron brackets, and a square wooden lantern. While lighthouses and range lights were often given height extensions, they were seldom decreased in height. In 1902, however, the Murray Harbour Front Range Light was decreased by 3 m (10 feet). It was designed by the Department of Marine and built by Joseph Egan. The Murray Harbour Range lights contributed to the development of the local fishing industry.

The range light is located on a sandy low area and is protected by a cribwork. It is maintained from April to December.
