The original light (1889) was a 9.1 m (30 foot) mast, with a shed at its base. The current back range has been moved often to range with the front light and shifting channel.

The current tower was designed by the Department of Marine and built by Mr. M. Walsh, who worked for the department. The square tapered wooden range light was once an open frame tower which was later enclosed and shingled. Both towers were typical of the era, and were utilitarian in appearance. The back range has very few decorative additions and is very similar in design to the front range, except that it has iron brackets and lacks corner boards. The tower is painted white and has a red vertical stripe on the range line.

Like many of the other Island lighthouses and range lights, the Malpeque Range Lights were important to the development of the fishing industry in and around Darnley Basin and Malpeque Bay.

This range light is located in the middle of a farmer’s field, but can easily be seen from the road.
