The tower replaces a 1869 beacon which was hoisted on a mast. This tower was designed by the Department of Marine, built by James Barclay, and is unique on Prince Edward Island as it houses two range lights. The square pyramidal wooden tower has a flared gallery and tall windows which are appropriately proportioned for the tower. The shingled tower is painted white with red trim, and has a red lantern. There is a vertical stripe on the Leard’s range line. The tower also has a triangular board with a red vertical day mark on the Palmer range line. Dark red paint is used on the Leard’s marker while a lighter, more orange shade of red is used for the Palmer’s marker.
The tower has been operated as the Victoria Seaport Museum by a non-profit volunteer group during the summer months since 1990. It houses a collection of photographs outlining the development of the seaport and the history of the former keepers. Visitors can climb the ladder to the top to view the lights and the harbour.
The lights are maintained from April to December.
