Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Andrew Mynarski joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941. During a raid on targets in France, Mynarski made a heroic effort to free Lancaster rear gunner John Brophy from the turret of his burning plane, even though Mynarskis own clothing and parachute were also burning. Although he finally bailed out of the crippled aircraft, Mynarski died. Miraculously, Brophy survived the crash and was able to recount the incredible heroic action of his brave comrade. Pilot Officer Mynarski was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously for his actions. |
