James Joyce (1882-1941) was an Irish novelist widely considered to be one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. He is known for his experimental use of language in such works as Ulysses (1922) and Finneganns Wake (1939). Joyce's formalistic innovations include an extensive use of interior monologue; a complex network of symbolic parallels drawn from mythology, history, and literature; and a unique language of invented words, puns, and allusions.
