In 1862, the City of Paris commissioned Marville to document the civic spaces that would eventually disappear under architect Baron Von Haussmann's epic transformation of the city. Similarly, Eugene Atget worked for various City bureaus to document and preserve the integrated rural and urban sites of Paris that were quickly disappearing.
