In the locations where stories have been recorded, [murmur] installs a green, ear-shaped sign with a phone number and a location code. Listeners call the number on the sign and enter the code that lets the [murmur] server know where they are standing. The computer then plays stories specific to that location. [murmur] stories range from historic to purely anecdotal-but they are not the official sanctioned civic histories; rather they are stories told purely from the point of view of each storyteller. Some recount the details of historic events-often with their own commentary on those events-while others talk about personal experiences on a given spot or stretch of sidewalk.
