Ed Ruscha (born 1937 in Omaha Nebraska) is one of America's most important and influential contemporary artists. Ruscha moved permanently to Los Angeles in 1956 and has consistently mingled his perspective of this city with the motifs of language and landscape to communicate a particular urban experience. Using photography, drawing, painting, and film, his work draws attention to the torrent of mass media-fed images and information that appear daily in urban life, casting a critical eye on the shifting emblems of American popular culture.
