Captain Dalton's hat
Order of the British Empire (OBE) medal. Captain Martin Gilbert Dalton M.B.E. (1889-1965) was Marine Superintendent (general manager) of the Coastal Boat Service from 1924 until his retirement in the 1955. He was instrumental in rescuing the survivors of the Florizel in 1917 when he single-handedly rowed a dory back and forth between the wreck of the Florizel and shore taking one passenger after the other back to safety. In 1937 he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and was awarded this medal for his public service. Railway Coastal Museum. 2004.0063.
