Named in 1534 by French explorer Jacques Cartier, St. Anthony held a strategic location to rich fishing grounds. In 1892 a British doctor named Wilfred Grenfell arrived in St. Anthony and commenced building a medical system that would grow to serve the entire region of Northern Newfoundland and Labrador. Dr. Wilfred Grenfell's Hospital at St. Anthony attended to the medical needs of residents of Labrador and Northern Newfoundland who mostly arrived by coastal boat. Clayton Cook Collection.
