The 4-4-0 locomotive No. 8 was built by Baldwin in 1899. The type number of a locomotive refers to the identifying characteristic of the distribution of the wheels. The middle number indicates the large driving wheels which supplied motive power. A 4-4-0 tender type, such as this one, had four driving wheels, four "pony wheels" in front, and no trailer truck wheels in the rear. A "tender type" locomotive pulled its coal or wood tender behind.
