Northumberland Fisheries Museum and Heritage Association

The mission of the Northumberland Fisheries Museum & Heritage Association is to bring awareness to the public as to the heritage and culture of the fishing industry, past and present, by collecting, preserving, and displaying artifacts and educating the youth of the Northumberland Strait and Gulf area.
The NFMHA is located in a historic CN Station in Pictou, NS, and is currently in the process of constructing a new museum complex along Pictou's waterfront, including a lighthouse, fully operational lobster hatchery, and interpretive panels for phase one of the project.


About the Collections
Artifacts and documents pertaining to the fishing industry of the Northumberland Strait area; the locally famed fishing boat the "Silver Boat" is on display along with an original fisherman's bunkhouse; a collection of photographs of fishermen from 1900-1950, plus many current.
Recent collections include the research, collection, artifacts, and photographs of over 150 NS lighthouses and others from around the world, donated by Rip Irwin, author, historian, and co-founder of the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society. Lighthouse information available at the lighthouse museum at the new museum site along Pictou's waterfront.
Scientific research and information available about the life cycle of a lobster in the new lobster hatchery laboratory on the Pictou waterfront. The NFM is growing lobsters from eggs to Stage IV to be released back into the waters of the Northumberland Strait. Experience and view this collection of material first hand.

Services & Activities
Major activity is to make available the rich sea heritage of the Northumberland Strait to the public; the museum often presents fishermen of the community providing demonstrations periodically; take home copies of lighthouse research & photos for your own research projects at the lighthouse museum; view & study the lifecylce of the lobster and the details of a lobster hatchery laboratory.

Research Services
Previous research projects include the Officers of the Department of Fisheries & Oceans; The Pictou Landing First Nations Community; and most recently, the lighthouse collection of author, historian and co-founder of the NS Lighthouse Preservation Society, Rip Irwin.
Books, videos, and interviews of fisherpeople, boat builders, cannery and factory workers, plus many others in the fishing industry available at the museum.

Educational Programs
An active Outreach Program travels to schools and communities throughout Atlantic Canada to teach the youth about the importance of the fishing industry and its culture to students, as well as offering videos, stories, and artifact samples to communities of interest.
Staff travel to schools/communities and provide hands on displays, videos, puppet shows, hand outs, in an interesting format geared to each audience.

Volunteer Services
Volunteer Services Available
Number of volunteers: 18
Activities: An executive committee of 6; plus 12 other active directors. In 2006, an associate membership was started; including a volunteer base and those interested in the museum and its projects.
Directors sit on a variety of committees, including building committee, fundraising committee, finance committee.
Board of Directors meet once a month, while committees meet weekly.

Member Privileges
$25.00 per year; includes invitations to special events & presentations, free admission to the museum, quarterly newsletters and opportunity to share ideas, thoughts to the Board of Directors.
