With over 45,000 works in its collection, the National Gallery of Canada boasts the largest collection of Canadian art in the world and the largest collection of European and American art in Canada.
About the Collections The National Gallery of Canada is the home of the most important collection of historical and contemporary Canadian art in the world. The Gallery also has very strong collections of Inuit art and Western European art from the 14th to the 20th century, an impressive collection of 20th century American art and an important representation of the visual culture of Asia. The National Gallery of Canada was among the first museums in the world to recognize photography as an art form when it organized, in 1934, a series of photography exhibitions. Today, the photography collection consists of over 19,000 works and is ranked among the top major international collections. The Gallery also has the most important collection of Media Arts in the world: over 600 titles, totalling more than 10,000 hours of video and film. The National Gallery of Canada has over 45,000 works in its entire collection, with over 1,200 on display in its permanent collection galleries.
