Ours is a small community Museum, who's Mission is to collect, preserve, research, exhibit and interpret artifacts which best serve to illustrate the founding, settlement and development of the Village of Mirror and immediate area, from 1880 to the present.
Our collection is comprised mainly of Pioneer settlers and Railway articles and photos, and most of our artifacts have been donated to the Museum over the course of twenty years. We also own and operate the nearby St. Monica's Church and graveyard surrounding it. The Provincial Historical Branch has declared this property a Historic Site. The Museum association provides access to the public year round and to the Church by request. About the Collections Our Museum collections range from CN and GTP items, such as an actual CN boxcar & caboose, to a 100-year-old church; and church artifacts from three churches,including a bible from the 1800's. We have local antique furniture and tools, photographs, and household items, including stove, cupboard, chairs, table, washers, and cameras. Our Reading Room has an exciting collection of pioneer photos and information from the late 1800's and early 1900's. Approximate number of objects in the collections: 3000 Archives We have a small archives containing photographs, administrative and private records. Architectural Records Manuscripts Photographs Decorative Arts We have a small collection of Musical Instruments from our local Mirror Band (no longer in existance). Musical Instruments Fine Arts We have a few paintings/drawings of places or items of local significance, completed by local artists. We have a set of early 1900 maps from the old Gadsby school, a telegraph from the early CN Railway, a collection of Church artifacts from 3 different closed churches, including a magnificent bible from the 1800's, various clocks and watches, a small collection of musical instruments from our former local Band, many articles of furniture and tools from the early 1900's. We also have a couple of early rifles, some local sports trophy's and articles, a couple of stone tools, and fossilized plants and many items from the old CN Railway. Research Services Our Reading room has local history books and articles, especially about the early pioneers who lived in the area along with photo albums of many of the events and people from the early 1900's. We assist many people who are searching for their roots or researching their geneology. Genealogical Research Library Other : We will assist our public to find and provide information on the conservation of their own personal artifact items. The Church is also available to be booked for special use, such as weddings. Volunteer Services Volunteer Services Available Volunteer Training Offered Number of volunteers: 12 Activities: Our volunteers perform most of the daily general activities of the museum, such as artifact display and protection, research, financial, clerical, and communication tasks. They also handle the cleanup and maintenance of the museum and assist with our demonstrations to the public. Member Privileges Members of the Mirror and District Museum have full free access to the Museum and it's services. They also are priveledged to be part of the voting and decision processes of the museum. Food Services We have no food services in the Museum Publications & Products We have produced our own brochure, and have Mirror collector pins, postcards and small souveniers for sale in the museum. Hours & Admission Operation: By Appointment Seasonal Open to the public part of June, and all of July & August and the September long weekend Special viewings are available by request year round.
