Celebration ’90

Gay Games III & Cultural Festival

Celebration ’90 Gay Games III & Cultural Festival took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, between August 4th to 11th, 1990. The event attracted over 7000 international participants making it the world’s largest sporting event held that year. Competition was open to all regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or ability, in keeping with the Gay Games’ guiding principles of “participation, inclusion and personal best.”

Celebration ’90 chronicles the fascinating eight-year journey taken by a small group of Vancouver amateur athletes which led to the first Gay Games to be hosted outside the United States. The story is told through the lens of LGBTQ2S+ video producers and the voices of their community as the events unfolded. Candid footage and insightful interviews from the Mary Anne McEwen Archive capture Celebration ’90’s ambition, complexity, and joyous accomplishments.
