Hugh McShane memorial booklet
November 20th 1923
Hugh McShane died on November 17th 1923 in an apparatus accident, the first Calgary firefighter to die in the line of duty. The memorial booklet from his funeral shows a range of ceremonial traditions which we see today, including a procession. The ceremony included members of the Calgary Police Force, the Fire Department, and citizens of the city. Although the Honour Guard would not exist for another 50 years, today Hugh is still remembered as one of the fallen nine.
