In the past, and still sometimes today, certain traditional meals are prepared according to the day’s catch or harvest: fish, bannock, game and berries
Nothing is wasted, everything is used. For example, bear meat can be boiled, roasted, smoked or added to stews. Paw meat is en Elder favourite. The fat is used for cooking purposes, and can even be spread on slices of bannock along with blueberry jam.
The Atikamekw call bannock “pakwecikan” which means “to take with the hands”; no knife is needed to eat bannock!
