Introduction

The Art Gallery of Hamilton's learning object package for grade 9 and 10 students encourages confident understanding of a variety of artistic approaches. Strategies for looking at and talking about art are demonstrated in visual analyses of important paintings in the AGH collection. Students read about exemplary artworks by well-known Canadian artists in five distinct categories: figuration, landscape, portraiture, still life, and abstraction. Through these readings, students learn to look at art critically and are challenged to apply newly gained knowledge in their own visual analyses.

The AGH resource includes:

  • Twentieth century highlights from the AGH collection in 5 major genres: portraiture, landscape, still life, figuration, and abstraction
  • Application of the elements and principles of art
  • Canadian art in relation to international historic styles
