Introduction

At the core of modern experience is the city. During the 20th century, populations tended to move from rural settlements to urban ones, a shift that largely reflected the continued industrialisation of human societies that had begun in the latter half of the 1800s. From large urban spaces, to suburbs, to smaller towns, the places we inhabit inevitably shape cultural expression. CITYSCAPES explores imaginative forms that reflect the influences of the urban.

This educational project uses works from the collection of the Confederation Centre Art Gallery as well as supplementary images and textual passages in order to encourage the investigation of cities and urbanisation in Canada and to discover links between the past and present, and among different media of expression.
