Introduction

Welcome to this exhibit on Coast Salish canoe racing. The Coast Salish people live on the central Pacific coast of North America in what is now southern British Columbia and Washington State. There are over 25,000 Coast Salish people, organized into over 50 different bands. In British Columbia, many Coast Salish bands are actively involved in treaty negotiations.

The Native Canoe was an economic necessity, like a railroad or highway, and it also provided recreation, which persists to the present day in the sport of racing.
