Introduction

Welcome to a selection of objects from the collections of the Canadian Museum of Civilization! These objects have been selected from Just For Nice, an exhibition on German-Canadian folk art that was held at the Museum of Civilization from May 15, 1993 to November 6, 1994.

The collection of folk art at the Canadian Museum of Civilization consists of many pieces from various cultures. The German-Canadian objects in this section were either brought over from Germany by immigrants, or made by artisans of German ancestry. The section explores the purpose of symbolism and looks at the images of German-Canadian folk art as examples of how meaning is revealed through symbols.

This Learning Collection is based on the Virtual Museum of Canada exhibit Canada-Germany Migration, a look at selected aspects of the historical, sociological and cultural impact of German migration to Canada.
