Introduction

Grace Bell (1900-1986) is a pioneer in bird song recording. Her fascination with birds, coupled with the foresight of Dr Clifford Carl to preserve Mrs Bell’s work, has made it possible for today’s generation of bird enthusiasts to enjoy the recordings.

This Learning Collection is a partial sampling of all the bird species available at the Virtual Museum Exhibit at: http://www.bcarchives.bc.ca/School_Programs/gracebell/english/grace.html

A song call recorded by Grace Bell, accompanied by her field notes, as well as an image and information on the species in British Columbia (parsed from the complete notes found on the web site, which are taken from The Birds of British Columbia (Campbell et al.), Volumes I, II and III) are included for each featured bird.

For ease, the species featured here are grouped in the following categories:

  • Water Birds
  • Birds of Prey
  • Fowl-Like Birds
  • Shore Birds
  • Seabirds and Gulls
  • Woodpeckers
  • Songbirds
