Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1867. Died in the same city in 1954. Edith Smith, who was one of George Harvey’s students at the Victoria School of Art in Halifax, later shared a studio with her younger brother Lewis, with whom she gave private courses. She was a teacher at heart, and taught at the Victoria School of Art and Halifax Ladies’ College. Her teaching emphasized the importance of drawing.
