Make sure your students understand the following terms:

First Nations (also, aboriginal):
Refers to the peoples living in North America prior to European contact. ‘Aboriginal’ includes First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Colony:
An area of land settled or conquered by a distant State and controlled by that State.

Dodem:
A natural object, often an animal, adopted by a First Nations family or clan as representative of them.

Iroquois:
First Nations peoples living in Ontario and New York State; also, their common language.

Mohawk:

One of the Iroquois nations.

Missionary:
A representative of an organized Christian religion, sent to spread Christian faith amongst a community.

Wampum belt:
A ceremonial belt or sash made from small polished beads, meant to commemorate or record an important meeting, agreement or event.
