In the winter, the blocks of ice were cut from the waterways and stored in buildings insulated with sawdust. In the summer and fall, the ice was delivered to homes to keep foods cold, like our modern coolers. In the late 19th century, the industrial revolution led to the development of a multitude of specialized handheld kitchen tools like this apple peeler. In the early 20th century, electric versions of the same appliances began to appear: coffee grinders, meat grinders, mixers, ice cream makers and more. Box with flatware in sterling silver.

Inherited flatware is often used for celebratory meals. In the early 19th century, silver tableware was made of solid silver and reserved for wealthier families. Silver plating made its first appearance around 1860, making cutlery more affordable.
