Our elders told us stories that we now tell our children about how the animals and fish of the sea came to be.

These stories tell of a young woman who was thrown from a skin boat into the sea by her fearful father.

As she grasped the sides of the boat, her father swung his knife chopping off her fingers. When they fell into the water, the fingers became whales, seals and polar bears and her nails became whalebone.

As the daughter sank into the sea she was transformed into the mystic being known as Sedna who came to rule over all life in the sea.

If offended, she will send bad luck to the hunters and bring starvation to their families. If treated with respect, Sedna will send forth abundance to Inuit through the skillful hunter.
