Since the ground was not safe and unable to take a heavy weight, the outer walls were placed on limestone slabs and the houses were built very narrow. There were no basements and simple wooden planks served as floors in the living area while the stables had only mud floors. The living area was heated by a central Russian stove. The typical colonist’s house was a one-story dwelling.
