North Toronto During the War

Now inextricably a part of Toronto, the area of North Toronto was tied to the downtown core through Yonge Street and the streetcars which traveled its length on a daily basis. It was, as all Toronto neighbourhoods, involved with the homefront war effort.

While paranoia took hold in the early months of the war (armed soldiers stood guard twenty-four hours a day at the Glengrove Hydro station, for instance), most of the activity centered on promoting victory bonds and working for local war materiel factories.

Like Havergal College, other area schools such as North Toronto Collegiate Institute and Blythwood Junior Public School, integrated themes of duty and diligence into class and social activities. One example not found at Havergal: the Toronto Farm Commando Brigade (funded by, among others, Eaton's and Simpson's) allowed local senior students to help bring in the harvest for rural families whose men were at war.
