Powell Street Grounds

Used for baseball and soccer from 1898 on, this park, officially named Oppenheimer Park, is located on the East side of Vancouver, bounded by Powell, Jackson, Cordova and Dunlevy Streets. Many Nikkei lived in the immediate area before the community was uprooted in 1942. See map ‘Baseball Parks in Vancouver.’

Powell Street, Vancouver

Powell Grounds

At the heart of the neighbourhood was the Powell Street Grounds, formally named Oppenheimer Park after the city’s second mayor. At the turn of the century in 1900, Vancouver’s first professional baseball club played here. Later, the Vancouver Nippon Baseball Club and then the Asahis made it their home.
