Introduction: The Expressive Strength of Art
The skill, dexterity and concern for finishing and symbolic function
that characterize certain objects made by the early First Nations
people reflect a desire to find artistic expression in highly innovative
ways, even though the work thus produced was often ephemeral. What
could have been the deep motivation that inspired these anonymous “artists”?
Art is born of a need for expression, a longing to leave one’s
mark. Surely the art of the early First Nations is a manifestation
of humanity’s thirst for life…and for rebirth.
