Artist Statement

Clay is my vehicle for communication. I try to achieve a balance between the large installations, collaborative work and making pots. I built a wood-fired kiln in Ingersoll, Ontario with two potters in 1990. Each year when I turn to making pots, I feel as if I am coming home. I place a line drawing of a house on the base of each pot enclosing my signature.

In the past few years I have been an artist-in-residence in Canada, the United States, and Japan. I feel that I gain a better understanding of myself and my work in these new contexts. The obsessive markings on my forms are as much about my love of handling clay as they are about the concepts behind the work. A "sense of place" always informs my pieces.

During the early years, I was primarily concerned with the manipulation and technical understanding of clay: form and surface. Now, my concerns are with the environment, the conservation and health of the planet, and consequently the health of the earth's inhabitants.
