The biological abundance of the fjord

Minke whaleThe Saguenay fjord is a safe haven for all of these marine animals. Of course, eating takes an important place, but good food doesn't account for everything!! They must also be able to practice other activities, but without food, they would be unable to stay in this area during the summer period.

Among all of the world's fjords, we can consider ours as being of great biological abundance and this, thanks to the water coming in at high tide twice a day, from the Saint Lawrence estuary. This cold, salted water is well oxygenated and loaded with plankton. It maintains life down to its deepest areas. The rythm of the tides thus represents the heart and lungs of the fjord.
