The Marine Park’s main goal is to preserve the species and ecosystems of a representative portion of the St.Lawrence Estuary and the Saguenay Fjord. In addition to this very important mission, the park provides the opportunity for visitors to learn about and appreciate the region’s fascinating heritage.

This conservation park is unique because of its exclusively marine environment. The park covers an area of more than 1 000 km2, including a representative portion of the northern half of the St.Lawrence Estuary and more than two thirds of the Saguenay Fjord.

Sight of the Marine Park

The majestic St. Lawrence Estuary with its diverse banks, cold saltwater and deep troughs abound with a varied and mysterious marine life has long attracted human beings, and continues to do so. While on the surface, the beauty of the Saguenay Fjord is striking, these waters also intrigue us as they reveal glimpses of their depths that have long been thought unfathomable. The meeting point of these two great rivers constitutes the heart of the Marine Park, a heart that beats to the rhythm of the tides and the movement of the dark waters of the fjord and the green waters of the estuary. This confluence is also the site of another exchange, that of humans who, for thousands of years, have benefitted from the resources of this rich environment.

Situated within close reach of four tourism regions, the Saguenay—St-Lawrence Marine Park beckons you to come and explore its network of continually evolving discovery locations that offer additional insights into park themes. A stop at one or more of the local cities, towns and islands will provide you with an outdoor recreational opportunity and the chance to visit any of several interpretation centres. In short, you’ll be part of a maritime, coastal or island experience. Sea kayaking, hiking, scuba diving, fishing, or a lighthouse tour are just a few of the ways you can take full advantage of your visit to the marine park area.
