During the Precambrian era (over 1 billion years), the region was a gigantic mountain range called the Grenville mountains. From 20 to 25 kilometres of rocky mass covered the plutonic and metamorphic rock (gneiss, migmatite, granite and amphibolite) resulting from enormous pressure and high temperature.
