HISTORY

The Kootenay Canal, built alongside the concentration of the Kootenay River Dams, diverts water along a 5 km (3 mi) canal to the four penstocks that carries the water to the turbines with a vertical drop of 75 m (246 ft) to the four generating units.

The head of the canal is located at the south side of the Corra Linn Dam and is partially concrete lined, utilizing the rock face on the south side of the canal as well. The water level is 15.2 m (50 ft) deep and the canal varies in width from 15 to 26 m (50 to 85 ft) wide.

The powerhouse contains four generating units, the first two went into service in 1975 and the second two in 1976. Water then returns into the Kootenay River through the tailrace above Slocan Pool.

Water levels for the Kootenay Canal are regulated by the Duncan Dam located at the north end of Kootenay Lake and the water released from the Libby Dam located in Montana. It is also controlled by an agreement to ensure that the Kootenay River Dams and the Nelson Powerplant have an assured amount of water at all times to continue generating power.
