REGION SEVEN: THE BOUNDARY

The Boundary area is located in the Monashee Mountains, an area that is drier than the Kootenay valleys with gentler slopes, and with rivers instead of lakes at the valley bottoms. The rangelands in the southern section of the area feature a larger expanse of sky that is visible is in contrast to the rugged peaks and dark forests to the east.

The Boundary was one of the busiest mining and smelting centres in the province. With the demand for cheap electricity at the turn of the 20th Century, construction of small generating stations began early. As the water levels fluctuated seasonally with great abandon in this region, not all of the projects were successful and they were dismantled by mid-century.

The Granby River, Kettle River and Boundary Creek all provided hydroelectric energy for the smelters in the area. As demand increased, the small power plants could not keep up and soon the larger West Kootenay Power and Light Company took over the supply and the small plants closed.
