It took them almost a year to get everything ready and for us to be examined. We had to go to Milan
for the health examinations. In the spring of 1948, after many promises, we finally boarded the ship for Canada. I had to make myself younger because the cut-off was 18. I was actually 19, but I tried to make myself appear younger. I shaved carefully I didn't want to show my age. My birth date was an embarrassment to me for many years afterwards. Whenever someone asked me when my birthday was, I had to stop and try and figure out how old I was supposed to be.
