A Day

The evening office of Compline has a special Marian note. The primary chant, Salve Regina, is sung in unison and in Latin. It is a beautiful melodic break from the simple chants throughout the day. It is sung in a darkened chapel with only a candle lighting the statue of Mary with the infant Jesus in her arms. Mary holds a place of great importance in the life of the monks - many monasteries are dedicated to her honor, including this one named Our Lady of the Prairies. After Compline, silence is kept in the monastery until the next day, after Lauds.
