How to be Self-Sufficient

The monks live life as self-sufficiently as possible. The Abbey benefits from each individual’s contribution. Everyone brings with them experience and talent, which they give to the community. This could be making cheese and jam, carpentry, dentistry, blacksmith or horticulture.

Make dinner one evening and look at each ingredient you are using in the meal. Notice all the effort that has gone into your dinner before you even started. How much of it do we actually produce on our own? How many gardens would a person have to maintain to feed a whole family? Try growing a few fruits and/or vegetables in your backyard in spring and summer, or even an herb pot on your windowsill. The care in maintaining a plant of your own is unmatched, especially when you can eat it later. Take a trip to the farmer’s market to support the efforts of local producers.
