The Language

Chanting, like the written traditions of old Christianity,
began in Latin. The original chant melodies are
derived from Latin accents. In an oral tradition of
composition, songs develop their own style of
melodies and rythms influenced by their original
language.

The 16th Century reform saw the translation into
English and French of many chants. However, the
practice remained largely in Latin until 1965 when the
Vatican II reformation of the church encouraged the
vernacular languages to become the language used in
chant. Today, around the world, chants, like the Bible
are used in regional languages.
