The Mitchell Family photographs were acquired by Mrs. Wyn Van Slyck when she purchased the Mitchell Costume Collection from the estate of Mildred (Parsons) Mitchell in 1977. The Mitchell Costume Collection, consisting of 1020 items, was then believed to be the largest and most comprehensive of its type in Canada. Many images of the family wearing the clothing in the costume collection are included among these photographs. The Mitchell Costume Collection and the photographs became part of the collection of the Dugald Costume Museum when it was opened in 1983.
