Scaffolding was required to build the chimney to the proper height and to maintain the chimney plumb to endure gusting winds.

The chimney, over the years of weathering, developed a slight sway so some of the weakened stone and decaying mortar have been replaced. Mr. Gamble used the most basic tools for the job - a hand made two-foot level with one plumb glass and a level glass.

A second chimney was added at the time the West Side addition was built to accommodate a second fireplace. It also was constructed with a large base but there was not the need for the height as this chimney was set away from the steep roofline.

The large predominate chimney is a characteristic feature of a Cotswold Cottage. The second chimney received damage when a tree fell across the corner of the house. Enough stones remained from the initial facing of the house to make the required repairs.
