When the 185th Battalion sailed overseas as part of the Nova Scotia Highland Brigade in October, 1916, they were enthusiastic about serving their country. After further training in England, however, they were not kept together as a unit. They were gradually sent group by group as reserves to other units, especially to the 25th Nova Scotia Battalion and the 85th. While they did not remain together as a distinct battalion, it did not dampen their spirits. They would take part in the two major battles of 1917--Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele along with their Nova Scotia Highland compatriots. Forged in battle, they would return to Canada to help build a nation.
