Military Bands

During the war years, patriotism was fueled by the stirring strains of "The Last Post" and the uplifting sounds of a full military band. The Highwood area has been home to many military bands over the years. The #5 Elementary Flight Training School has it's own band under the direction of bandmaster Jack Pickersgill Sr. Also during the Second World War, High River and Okotoks residents put their rivalry aside to play together as the High River/Okotoks band, and welcomed returning soliders home.

School Bands

School bands throughout the Highwood area have won many awards and accolades. A fire in 1992 at Senator Riley High School in High River demonstrated the importance of band music in the community. As the fire raged in the front of the building, teachers, parents and band students were hauling the instruments out of the band room at the back.
