On November 19th, 1916, Clara wrote with a sense of pride about the fact that Mortimer had done some travelling and visited relatives in Bournemouth. She also included a list of items which she had sent in a parcel to Walter.

On December 12th, 1916, Clara wrote of receiving the news that Walter had been wounded and was "ill and so far away, and I cannot go to him."

January 19th, 1917: "Letter from dear Mort dated 26th & 29, he was well & had a fine xmas in Ayr." Walter would have been in Wandsworth Hospital in London at this time. He was well and recovering from his wounds.

Diary entry for December 17th, 1917: "Sending letters to Walter, one to Mortimer enclosed also papers. Went up to Court house with shirt first time since I heard the news of Mortimer's hand being amputated."

This must have been a gloomy Christmas for Clara. Beatrice, her young daughter was not well and she was obviously worried about Mortimer.
