Clara wrote in her journal on April 22nd,1916: "We all went to Parsons' and had photograph taken."
Clara's "We" included Mortimer, Raymond, Ernest, Fred, and Beatrice. These are the only photos found of that event. The three brothers in this photograph are, from the left, Fred, Mortimer, and Raymond.

This page is one of four on which Mortimer wrote briefly about his journey aboard the ship S.S. Sicilian. A picture of this ship leaving St. John's Harbour on July 19th, 1916, is included in Volume 1 of the Book of Newfoundland compiled by Joseph R. Smallwood.
Mortimer's diary entry for the date of departure is the 19th of July, "There are about 300 passengers and 500 of us."

Entry for the 20th, "...Got sick."

Walter was wounded in a battle on the Somme, France. He was subsequently sent to Wandsworth Hospital in London. This photograph shows the hospital ward decorated for the Christmas season. Walter is sitting in bed on the far right.
